Conclave Quest Events: Sneak Peek

This year at Conclave, Occoneechee Lodge will be presenting some of the best conclave quest events in recent history!  Some of these events include:

The frozen tee shirt race - can your lodge conduct a successful relay race while exchanging a frozen tee shirt and carrying another lodge member on your back??

The four man pushup - where four members from each lodge must successfully complete ten pushups.  The catch is, each team member will have another member's legs on their back!

Returning to simpler times, another event will be the all-natural fire building contest - where members cannot use matches or a lighter!

Our fourth event will be the human knot game, but on steroids - Using a minimum of 15 members, each Lodge will get themselves into a knot and they each have 15 minutes to undo the knot!  The more people you use, the more points you get!

And the final event is none other than a 25 man log race.  More details will be expressed at conclave, see you in April!

Do you have what it takes to win the Quest for the Golden Arrow?

 OAX: Sneak Peek
Training is a key aspect of any successful Conclave.  Our section has a unique tradition of providing that training through The Order of the Arrow Xperience, or OAX.  Just as no two Conclaves are ever the same, neither are two OAXs.

I'm excited about the upcoming OAX at Conclave 2011.  There will be several different categories of exhibits this year including Indian Affairs.  In the Indian Affairs area, you'll be able to learn and practice an American Indian dance or work on making regalia.  If you're new to Indian Affairs, then you'll get the chance to enter a raffle to win a new piece of regalia when you participate in a group regalia-construction session.

Another interesting part of OAX will be the Troop Activities area.  Arrowmen always hear return in service to your unit but sometimes we wonder how we can do that.  Troop Activities will allow you to participate in an entertaining activity such as icebreakers or modern camping utilities.  Once you've seen these exhibits, youll be given printed instructions on how to recreate the activity for your troop thereby giving you a way to serve your unit with a new program.

I'm also eager to let you know that this year exhibits won't be the only part of OAX.  We are returning to some classroom-setting training as well.  There will be sessions for Arrowmen from all of the lodges of SR-7B to participate and share ideas about leadership, serving others, and various other topics.

I look forward to seeing you at Conclave and in the OAX area!

How to Get to Conclave

It's the highlight of every year for every lodge. Conclave is a time of fun and fellowship between lodges across the state. One of the biggest challenges that every lodge runs into every year is getting a lodge's members to attend. There are always barriers that each lodge runs into, whether it is conflicts with prom night or the distance that a lodge has to travel to conclave that year. How to overcome these barriers is a challenge in itself. Last year Nayawin Rar Lodge brought over 50 percent of its total membership to conclave. Many have asked how this was possible with all of the barriers that they could have run into. Purpose was the key that helped us reach this goal. Nayawin Rar considered the purpose of conclave and why there was a need to bring such a large group. We thought of how Conclave brings people closer together and teaches us about the true meaning of what it is to be an arrowman.

In order to reach our goal we started publicizing conclave very early. Through our publications we contacted scoutmasters and parents because without them we would never have been able get enough arrowmen there. We also chose a theme that our entire lodge could really have fun with and would be able to pull off. In preparation for conclave we practiced quest events as well as any competitions that we might participate in as a lodge. By joining together as one lodge we really learned the importance of brotherhood and showed our sense of brotherhood strongly at conclave. As a lodge we also hope to have just as strong of an attendance at CONCLAVE 2011!!!

OA and its Connection in School

Recently featured in an article in the Greenville Daily Reflector were several members of the Croatan Lodge. The article discussed how students at D. H. Conley High School were embracing diversity and Native American culture.

The O A has a strong connection with Native American culture. Most of our principles come from Native Americans. We dance, drum and sing in our Order for fun. We also do our best to respect the culture that we have come to love. In my school, we are very fortunate to have a club called People of the Americas Club or P.O.A for short.

The goal of this club is to promote the different ethnic backgrounds that our school is composed of. We promote different ethnic holidays and other events throughout the year. During the month of November, we promote Native American month by having our drum team called Morning Star perform throughout the school. Our drum team is composed of both native and non-native students. We also have students that are very active in the O A and this is a great way for those students to learn more about the Native American culture. P.O.A teaches us to respect all cultures, and as arrowmen this is something that all of us should do.
